Spain’s capital since 1561, the beautiful city of Madrid lies slap bang in the centre of the country. Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s landmark plazas marks the nation’s most central point. There’s so much to take in here; the parks, the palace, the bustling plazas (great spots for chilling out!) and not forgetting its art museums – many people consider Madrid to be the European capital of art. It's simply a must see!
The city is built on the River Manzanares and it's said that it was founded by the Romans around about the 2nd century BC, who called their village 'Matrice' from which the name Madrid evolved.
The city itself is fairly compact making it easy enough to get around on foot. It’s full to the brim with fascinating places to explore and the friendly Madrilenos (the locals) are a bonus.
There’s no shortage of lively nightlife spots here either with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs, open until the wee hours.
Madrid is Spain’s business centre as well as the headquarters for its government. It’s also the home of the Royal Family. Not only this, the city is also well known for one of the world’s best soccer teams – Real Madrid.
As you’d expect the city is the best place to practice your flamenco dancing, but for whatever reason you come here, you'll not leave disappointed.
