How to get to Madrid:
The easiest and quickest way to get to Madrid is by air. Madrid has a large airport called Barajas – it's the country's busiest airport with four terminals and most international airlines operate from here. It's situated about 13km northeast of the city centre, but don’t worry there are excellent airport-city public transport connections. There’s a metro station at the airport – located on the ground floor of Terminal 2 and Line 8 operates from here. So just pick up a metro map and you shouldn’t have any difficulties getting to the city centre,
A bus also runs regularly from the airport to the city centre. It’s called the ‘Blue Bus’ and it will take you as far as the Plaza de Colon underground bus station in central Madrid. It’s fairly easy to connect to the underground network from here.
There are always plenty of taxis outside each terminal building, so hailing one shouldn’t be a problem.
Madrid has two main train stations; Atocha which is in the south of the city and Chamartín, to the north. Trains to the rest of Spain leave Atocha while a number of international services operate from Chamartin.
Driving to Madrid from Portugal or France isn’t a big deal either, as all major highways/motorways lead to Madrid.
