Alcala Gate

Within the Plaza de la Independencia you’ll find amongst other fascinating attractions, the captivating Puerta de Alcala. It is also called the Alcala Gate and was built between 1769 and 1778.

King Carlos III did not like the gate that was originally there so he ordered for a replacement to be built to make the entrance look more attractive. Many architects put forward their designs and the final and Sabatini composed chosen design.

The monument is located near the city centre and the Parque del Buen Retiro. It has neo-classical features and consists of five arches. The gate is made of granite and stone and there are two statues designed by Francisco Guttierrez fixed on the top of the gate and each arch has a lions head resting on the top.

It is even more attractive by night when it is lit up. Well worth a visit.
